Last week, Netflix released a first look behind-the-scenes of 13 Reasons Why‘s final season. Featuring actors shooting their final scenes and saying goodbye to one another on set, the inside look into the hit series was emotional for many fans.

Premiering on the streaming service June 5, the final season picks up right where season three left off. Fans were left questioning what’s to come next after finding out the character Alex murdered athlete and sexual predator Bryce. The character Monty, however, ends up being framed for Bryce’s death. Lead character Clay Jensen (Dylan Minnette) and a few of his fellow classmates are the only ones that know about Alex’s secret.

In the new season, however, it appears someone plans to expose Jensen and company’s little secret. The opening scene of the new trailer reveals the spraypainted phrase “Monty was framed.” Since last season ended with the character Winston being upset about Monty’s framing, the trailer shows that Winston wants to expose the truth behind the murder.

13 Reasons Why‘s showrunner Brian Yorkey recently spoke to Entertainment Weekly about the final season.

“Certainly we saw at the end of season 3 that Winston can alibi Monty and is upset at the way Monty was used by these kids to get away with murder,” Yorkey says. “So Winston is certainly going to be a significant factor in season 4. He is going to be trying to find out what really happened.”

As the characters prepare for their high school graduation, the show’s final season appears to be as intense as ever. While preparing to graduate, the characters are also wondering if their secret about Monty being framed for Bryce’s death will be exposed. Along with this, viewers will also see Jensen struggling with his mental health and stress surrounding the murder.

Alongside Minnette, Alisha Boe (Jessica Davis), Christian Navarro (Tony Padilla), Brandon Flynn (Justin Foley), Miles Heizer (Alex Standall), Ross Butler (Zach Dempsey) and more will be reprising their roles for the final season.

The trailer for 13 Reasons Why‘s final season is available to watch below.

13 Reasons Why has had its fair share of controversy since its first season. Many viewers praise the series for tackling subject matter such as suicide, mental health, sexual assault and bullying. However, others have dismissed the show over the way the series has portrayed these difficult topics. Two years after the first season aired, Netflix edited a very graphic scene showing the show’s main character Hannah’s suicide which many people thought was late to be doing.

The show is also linked to increases in teen suicides through numerous studies. In a study done by National Institutes of Health, researchers suggested that 13 Reasons Why is linked to a spike in teen suicide. A second study also shows a similar conclusion finding that months after the show’s launch the youth suicide rate for ages 10-19 rose unexpectedly by 13 percent.

Netflix released a statement in regards to the studies stating they were “looking into the research,” which they say conflicts with another study from the University Of Pennsylvania in which suicide rates dropped.
